FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
What is a truck cap?

A truck cap is a rigid enclosure installed over the bed of a pickup truck to provide covered cargo space, weather protection and additional security. Depending on the design, truck caps can also support roof racks, rooftop tents, side-access doors, windows and accessories.

Is a truck cap the same as a truck canopy?

Yes. Truck cap, truck canopy, truck cover, camper shell, and truck topper generally describe the same type of pickup-bed enclosure. The preferred term varies by region, manufacturer and customer.

What is the difference between a truck cap, truck topper and camper shell?

In most cases, truck cap, truck topper, camper shell, pickup cap and truck canopy refer to the same general product category. Differences usually come from regional terminology rather than major differences in the product itself.

How do I know which truck cap fits my truck?

Truck cap fitment is normally determined by your truck's year, make, model, generation and bed length. Bed shape, tailgate design, utility rails and special factory options can also affect compatibility.

Are truck caps waterproof?

Truck caps should generally be considered weather-resistant rather than completely waterproof. A properly fitted and installed truck canopy can provide excellent protection from rain and snow, but water may still enter through tailgate gaps, seals, windows or accessory mounting points which is why we recommend getting it professionally installed.

How much does a truck cap weigh?

Truck cap weight varies by material, truck size and construction. Aluminum truck caps are generally lighter than comparable steel systems, while fiberglass canopies typically fall somewhere in between. Always check the weight of the specific model and configuration.

How much does a truck cap cost?

Truck cap prices vary significantly by material, truck fitment, windows, roof capacity, accessories and installation. In Canada, basic toppers may start around the lower four figures, while premium aluminum, fiberglass and overland truck canopies can cost several thousand dollars.

Can you put a rooftop tent on a truck cap?

Yes, but only when the truck cap and complete roof system are properly rated for the rooftop tent. Check both dynamic and static roof-load ratings along with the capacity of the roof rack, crossbars and mounting hardware.

What is the difference between static and dynamic roof load?

Dynamic roof load is the amount of roof weight the truck cap is rated to carry while the vehicle is moving. Static roof load applies while the truck is parked and is especially important when people are occupying a rooftop tent.

What material is best for a truck cap?

There is no single best material for everyone. Aluminum truck caps are popular for their strength-to-weight ratio and accessory compatibility. Fiberglass is popular for colour matching and factory-style appearance, while steel or stainless steel can provide strong heavy-duty construction.

Are aluminum truck caps good?

Yes. A properly engineered aluminum truck cap can offer excellent strength, relatively low weight, corrosion resistance and roof-load capability. Aluminum is particularly popular for overlanding, camping and work-truck applications.

How long does a truck cap last?

A quality truck cap can last many years when properly installed and maintained. Lifespan depends on construction quality, materials, weather exposure, use, maintenance and the availability of replacement parts.

Can a truck cap be removed?

Yes. Most truck caps can be removed, although rigid canopies usually require multiple people or appropriate lifting equipment. Electrical connections, mounting hardware and accessories also need to be disconnected properly.

Can I install a truck cap myself?

Some truck caps can be installed by experienced owners, but professional installation may be preferable when the canopy is heavy, requires electrical wiring, needs special mounting hardware or will carry significant roof loads.

Do truck caps lock?

Most rigid truck caps have lockable rear and/or side doors. Security varies depending on the locks, door construction, windows, hinges and tailgate design.

Are truck caps secure?

A rigid truck cap can provide excellent cargo security when equipped with strong doors, locks and a secure tailgate. Solid-side truck canopies also keep valuable equipment out of sight.

Can you sleep inside a truck cap?

Yes. Many people use truck caps for truck-bed camping. Sliding windows, ventilation, interior lighting, insulation and a sleeping platform can make the space more comfortable.

What is the best truck cap for camping?

For camping inside the pickup bed, look for ventilation, sliding windows, weather protection and interior space. For rooftop-tent camping, roof capacity, rack compatibility and accessory mounting become more important.

What is the best truck cap for contractors?

Contractors often benefit from solid side panels, lockable gullwing doors, strong roof racks, shelving and organized tool storage. Aluminum truck caps are particularly popular for commercial and work-truck applications.

What are gullwing doors on a truck cap?

Gullwing doors are large side-access panels that open upward. They allow users to access equipment near the front or sides of the truck bed without climbing through the rear.

What are MOLLE panels on a truck cap?

MOLLE panels provide modular mounting points for compatible equipment such as recovery boards, tools, storage pouches and other accessories. They are particularly popular on overland and work-oriented truck canopies.

Should I choose a truck cap with sliding windows?

Sliding windows are useful if you prioritize ventilation, natural light, camping or pet transportation. Solid side panels may be preferable if maximum privacy and cargo security are more important.

Can you put a roof rack on a truck cap?

Yes, provided the canopy is designed and rated for one. Roof racks and crossbars can be used for kayaks, bikes, cargo boxes, rooftop tents and other equipment when all applicable load limits are followed.

Does a truck cap affect vehicle payload?

Yes. The weight of the truck cap, roof rack, rooftop tent, accessories and cargo all contribute to the vehicle's total load. Installing a truck cap does not increase the pickup's factory payload rating.

Is a truck cap better than a tonneau cover?

It depends on your needs. A tonneau cover is lighter and maintains a low-profile bed, while a truck cap provides substantially more enclosed cargo volume, vertical storage, camping capability and accessory options.

Do truck caps require maintenance?

Yes. Regularly inspect and clean the canopy's seals, locks, hinges, windows, gas struts, mounting hardware and roof accessories. Proper maintenance can improve weather resistance and extend the life of the truck cap.
